“The Fighters” (Personal Project)

This is a personal project I have been working on for the last few months. It came about from my love of Mixed Martial Arts that I acquired as an 18 year old growing up in Bakersfield. I started doing Muay Thai at that age as a way to keep fit and I fell in love with the sport. It is one of the few things that I can do athletically and never feel bored. It has also contributed to a better sense of self-confidence and independence which are two things that have always been important to me. And even though I am just a hobbyist in the sport I have always been intrigued by the Fighters who do the sport to make a living. The work they put in takes a great deal of strength and determination and the time they spend pushing their bodies to the limit is un-believable. I have great respect for them and am also always wanting to learn more about what drives these elite athletes to step into a cage and put their lives on the line.

This is a series about Strength, Power, Will, Faith, and Never F’n giving Up!

I am hoping my images help me explore this on a deeper level and that they can answer as many questions as they also bring about. I am interested in the multidimensional personalities of these fighters that can sometimes be surprising to a public who simply views them as “tough guys”.

All images have been taken at Pasadena’s # 1 MMA gym, Fight Academy. I have to thank my Coach, Savant Young ( co-owner of Fight Academy and Pro MMA Fighter), who has given me the freedom to pursue this project and also has given me the trust I need in order to make the portraits I have been able to make of him.

Here are some examples of those Portraits:

I love mixed martial artists and your photos exemplify the emotion and power of MMA. Thank you for sharing this.

    • Dave, thanks! If you would like to post those images you wrote me about months ago, on your blog I would be honored. Sorry for the late response. If you could just link to me that would be great 🙂
      Thanks again
